Glass Ceiling Cast Discuss Chicago Ahead Of Dolman Theatre Performances

Some of the cast of Newport -based musical theatre company Glass Ceiling Theatre have been discussing their roles in a forthcoming presentation of the musical Chicago which comes to Newport’s Dolman Theatre from March 21.

The interviews can be heard on the latest Entertainment South Wales podcast.

Set in the legendary city during the roaring “jazz hot” 20s, Chicago tells the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail. Roxie Hart is a nightclub singer who achieves fame when she murders her lover while Velma’s serving time for killing her husband and sister after finding the two in bed together.

Featuring classic tracks such as All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango and They Both Reached For The Gun, the production will be directed by Emily John and Victoria Bryant.

Demi Hartry is no stranger to musical theatre and particularly Chicago as her previous encounter with the show was when she played the role of Velma in a summer school presentation. This time she’s relishing in stepping in to the role of Roxie.

Demi says “I like all the comedy aspects of Roxie, she just wants to be a star, she puts her own showbiz stamp on things. For example, singing about her sweet little baby and going into this massive dance routine and how this baby is going to help her out. She’s trying to make it about the baby but really it’s all about her!”

Savannah Mountain is no stranger to musical theatre productions in Newport and this time is stepping into the role of a character of Hungarian origin, Hunyak.

“I’ve never read Hungarian as a language before,” says Savannah, “I’ve had to phonetically translate it, so I’ve actually gone on to different websites to have a look at different girls doing the part and try and get some inspiration from that.”

Morgan Meredith who plays Velma Kelly gets to sing lead on what is perhaps Chicago’s most enduring number, All That Jazz, and is bubbling with excitement regarding the production and how the musical is coming together as an ensemble piece.

“It’s fun, its clever, a very intelligent musical,” says Morgan, “Whether you’re a musical theatre fan or interested in seeing some new theatre, what Glass Ceiling Theatre are producing, I can’t wait to show!”
