Only Men Aloud Star Supports South Wales Music Competition
Founder of the Novello Orchestra and member of Only Men Aloud, David Mahoney, is encouraging young musicians to get involved with the South Glamorgan Festival for Young Musicians 2018.
The festival, held annually in Cardiff, offers performance and competition opportunities to young musicians from South Wales up to the age of 23. This year the festival takes place on the 5th and 6th May at Kings Monkton School, Cardiff.
Previous competitors in the festival include Lucie Jones, Charlotte Church, Katherine Jenkins, Ioan Grufudd and David Mahoney.
Now patron to the festival, David is encouraging young musicians of all ages and abilities to showcase their talent and enjoy performing.
‘I’m delighted to be Patron of the South Glamorgan Festival for Young Musicians, " says David, " Having competed in the festival when I was a youngster, I know first-hand the positive effect it can have on young people. It’s a brilliant platform for young musicians and my hope is that all those taking part will gain the confidence and experience from its competitions to further their musical attainment and encourage a long future of music making!’
Set up as part of the Cyncoed and Lakeside Festival in 1983 by Dr Peter Randerson, the aim of SGFYM was to foster musical excellence by providing a friendly and encouraging environment for young musicians to gain performance experience. 35 years on, it is run by a team of young volunteers and musicians looking to make a difference.
Peter, founder and president of SGFYM, said ‘The Festival has always been about giving young musicians, of whatever standard, the experience of performing in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. It’s important to build their confidence and encourage their musical development. It is a great pleasure for me to see the Festival continue to flourish over so many years, as new generations of young players and singers have come along to perform with us.’
