CD Review: Spellbound - Rare and Unreleased Motown Gems by Brenda Holloway

CD Review: Spellbound - Rare and Unreleased Motown Gems by Brenda Holloway

Brenda Holloway is perhaps best remembered for scoring a US hit in 1964 with her rendition of Every Little Bit Hurts. Having signed to Motown in 1963 she would record prolifically for the label for the next few years whilst gaining her own string of hit singles in the Billboard chart.

Spellbound- Rare and Unreleased Motown Gems from SoulMusic Records, offers up 33 tracks from the archive, many of which have remained unreleased for the best part of 50 years. Tracks like Lucky My Boy, Don’t Compare Me with Her and Deep Freeze all have that unmistakable pop/soul Motown vibe which makes you wonder why they have remained in the archive so long.

The limelight has clearly shone on some quality sounds from the Motown label over the decades and here is a doorway to some more. The 60s loss is definitely our gain.
