Talking Music With Hawkwind's Dave Brock on Into The Woods

“it is a concept, it’s about taking people on journeys,” Hawkwind founder Dave Brock tells Andy Howells as they discuss the band’s new album, Into the Woods, out now on Cherry Red Records, “one track will flow into another and when you’ve got it going it does sound good.”

The album follows on from last year’s album “When the Machine Stops” but as Dave reveals the conceptual flow of tracks such as Cottage In The Woods, The Woodpecker and Have You Seen Them owes its inspiration to a variety of sources.

“I remember when The Moody Blues used to do it in the late 60s / early 70s,” recalls Dave, “ I used to love all that stuff. At the end of the day you end up doing a similar thing and it makes it interesting especially now. Who wants to listen to one track and then another track and then you think that’s the same as the one before?”

The album was recorded late last year and is already proving popular with fans who have sampled several tracks at the bands live shows, “We just got on with it really,” Dave continues, “In this business, you can’t just sit there twiddling your fingers. I personally think it’s one of the better ones we’ve done for quite a while.”

Dave also gets inspiration from another medium of music, “I listen to a lot of jazz, late night jazz programmes, I hear the odd rock pieces that come on but I can’t really put my finger on any band that makes me say I really like listening to them but there’s a variety of music I listen to”.
