Meet The Band: Formation
Formed by brothers Will and Matt Ritson, Formation are a five-piece band from London who blend disco grooves, punk attitude and vehement social insight. Inspired by artists as diverse as John Maus, Fugazi, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Ornette Coleman, they have built a strong following for their ferociously fun and energetic live shows.
The band play Bristol’s Exchange on March 22, in support of their debut album Look At The powerful People, which features new productions of some of their singles Pleasure and Drug, as well as their latest cut Powerful People. Andy Howells recently put questions to Will Ritson of the band.
How did you first start out in music?
We were all involved in local music projects, orchestras, choirs and jazz bands. Local council schemes in Camden and Merton that helped us with music lessons at school.
Who or what has inspired you most on your musical journey?
We're all inspired by very different things, but I think pushing each other to be better is probably what keeps us going!
Can you give us some background about your latest release?
Our debut album, 'Look At The Powerful People was recorded it in two weeks at a studio in London with Ben Baptie and Leon Vynehall co-producing. Its the culmination of 3 years of work, songwriting, playing live and building the ultimate sound of Formation.
Are you looking forward to the tour?
Yeh, it's going to be awesome! It will be great to re-visit some of the cities that we've played in before but this time we'll be headlining the shows.
What can people expect from your forthcoming Bristol gig?
What else have you got planned for the rest of the year?
Hopefully we'll be going to Japan and playing some dates in Australia and the USA later in the year. We've also got some top secret, crazy, musical experiments planned.
