La Cage Aux Folles
New Theatre, Cardiff

Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman’s musical La Cage Aux Follies, opened at The New Theatre on Tuesday evening.

The production based on the 1973 French play by Jean Poiret tells the story of Georges and the dazzling drag artiste Albin, star of La Cage Aux Folles, who live an idyllic existence in the heart of St Tropez. But behind the curtains of this sparkling extravaganza, all may be about to change.  When Georges' son Jean-Michel announces his engagement to the daughter of a notorious right-wing politician determined to close down the local colourful night-life.

From the opening number the show is full of pizzazz, music, amazing outfits, feathers and sequins.  This exuberant feel-good atmosphere continues throughout the production with some really funny scenes in the second half of the show.

Outstanding as Albin is John Partridge who performs one of the show’s finest moments with his rendition of I Am What I Am in the first half.  Along with Adrian Zmed and Dougie Carter, John create a strong family dynamic with their little on-stage family, to a point that  I really grew to care about them as the show progressed.

The best feel-good show I have seen in a long time, La Cage Aux Folles continues at Cardiff's New Theatre until February 4.
