On Stage: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

Based on the famous film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, follows the story of Potts, a whacky inventor and his two children as they restore an old race car, meet Truly Scrumptious and attempt to defeat Baron Bomburst and the child catcher.

From the show's overture, you could see that  technology rather than the set was going to play a large part in the production.

From the moment he steps on  the stage,  Lee Mead personifies Caractacus Potts in a great way. The chemistry between him and his 2 children played by Henry Kent and Lucy Sherman is wonderful and you instantly feel drawn into their little family.

Carrie Hope Fletcher is outstanding as Truly Scrumptious and the chemistry sizzles between her and Lee Mead. This leads me to say that Toot Sweets was my favourite scene of the whole show with excellent singing and dancing from the ensemble cast.

Stealing the show for me are Sam Harrison and Scott Page as Boris and Goran  the inept spies for Baron Bomburst.  Their interactions throughout the first half of the show had everyone laughing.

While the set was simple, it was brought to life through projections and lighting on the background, the favourite for me been the song Hushabye Mountain.

You can catch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Wales Millennium Centre until August 21,  make sure you book your ticket to see if the car really can fly!
