Celebrate Christmas With The Best In Choral And Classics

Christmas is a time for traditional song and music and St David’s hall will host several concerts highlighting vocal performances and music with a festive air in the coming week. Andy Howells looks at a few of the highlights.

At 1pm today (December 9) an hour-long festive programme with the Royal Welsh College Brass Band will include festive favourites and traditional carols for those wishing to take an interlude from the busy schedule of Christmas shopping.

On Saturday December 10, two shows at 3pm and 7.30pm entitled The Promise Of Christmas will feature The Cambrensis Choir & Orchestra, the St David's Praise Choir and The Promise of Christmas Youth Choir (at 3pm only) will share the stage along with guest soloist Katy Treharne.

Katy has thrilled audiences in past at the National Concert Hall of Wales with Cambrensis, and she is well known in the musical theatre world having performed leading roles in several West End musicals. Joining Katy are the Orchestra Leader David Lewis, and Music Directors Jeffrey Howard and Anne Brown.

City Voices Cardiff will present their annual Christmas show on Sunday December 11 featuring a mix of much-loved carols and seasonal music. City Voices Cardiff formed in 2008 and initially consisted of a small choir of 25 people, their reputation has grown and now they feature a membership of nearly 200! They have so far raised over £50,000 for various good causes, and the proceeds from this concert will go to their 2016 nominated charity Child Bereavement UK.

The annual Christmas Concert of Seasonal Music & Carols takes place on Wednesday December 14 featuring acclaimed organist Jane Watts, the brass ensemble of the Welsh Guards, a Massed Welsh Hospitals Choir of 200 voices and special guest violinist Charlie Lovell-Jones. Also taking part will be local schoolchildren and conductor David J. Davies

Proceeds from the concert go to the charity work of CLIC Sargent, which cares for children with cancer.
