Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra are set for a musical celebration of the cinema world’s greatest heroes and villains as A Night at the Movies returns to St David’s Hall on December 9

Movie fans will get the chance to experience in a live environment, some of the most memorable movie music ever created including themes and music from family adventure film series such as Harry Potter, Superman, Indiana Jones, Psycho, Thunderbirds and Pirates of the Caribbean.

“It’s very immediate music,” conductor and A Night at the Movies presenter Michael Bell tells Andy Howells, “it really appeals, as the programme is full of familiar tunes and even if people haven’t seen the films, they’ll appreciate the exciting music.”

The evenings repertoire will feature the Welsh Premiere of music from the Gregory Peck Classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, which will commemorate the late American actor’s centenary.

Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra will also be continuing their thirty-year tradition of playing music from the Star Wars film series as composed by John Williams, this time with the bonus of a Welsh Premiere of including five pieces from last year’s release, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

“If you know (the music of) John Williams its brilliantly orchestrated,” says Michael of The Force Awakens music, “There’s something for everybody in the orchestra, it’s very colourful and reflects themes from the original Star Wars films.”

Michael feels the Star Wars series has helped inspire people to listen to classical music. “It was the original Star Wars film in 1977 that brought back the orchestras to film soundtracks,” he says, “Up until then, science fiction films had gravitated towards electronic sounds and computer generated music. Then the symphony orchestras returned for the Hollywood epics as they had appeared in the swashbuckling films of the 1930s. They have continued to play a vital role in the soundtracks of film music since!”
